Thuringia: Strength in the Heartland of Germany. Located between Nordhausen and Sonnenberg, Eisenach and Altenburg, Thuringia has always remained a world-open region throughout it’s history; a crossroads, where trade routes and culture meet.
After 1989, the State of Thuringia was presented with the huge task of overcoming the decades of isolation it experienced from being on the perimeter of both east and west. The fact that Weimar was declared European City of Culture 1999, as the first formerly eastern German city to receive such an award, is a considerable and positive step in this direction.
For Thuringia, German reunification not only signifies belonging to a unified Germany, but also presents the opportunity of integration into a united Europe. In this respect, Thuringia is an existing, model example for the central and eastern European candidate countries that are striving for accession into the European Union.
Thuringia takes full advantage of its location between eastern and western countries and maintains established links with its partner regions in
Essex (England),
Picardie (France) and
Malopolska (Poland). In addition to these partnerships, Thuringia has connections with the central and eastern European states, in particular with the Republic of Hungary.
