The European Charter of Fundamental Rights

The German States have been actively engaged in promoting a future project of common interest: the European Charter of Fundamental Rights.

This Charter will establish and protect the fundamental human rights of the Citizens of Europe.

Juergen Gnauck, then Minister for Federal and European Affairs and leader of the Thuringian State Chancellery, represented the position of the German Federal States at a Conference to prepare the Charter for the Nice Summit in December 2000. Minister Gnauck successfully introduced the numerous proposed recommendations on behalf of the Federal States, for instance the prevention of trafficking in Human Beings was an initiative proposed by Thuringia and supported by the German States.
